A bone graft is usually placed to preserve bone after a tooth extraction or rebuild lost bone and support dental implants.

Patients in The Villages, FL may have been told by other providers that they are not a candidate for dental implants because they don’t have enough healthy bone for support. Dr. Jaffal and Dr. Livada at Central Florida Oral, Facial and Periodontal Surgery can use advanced techniques to restore areas of bone loss, giving you more options for your care. Most of our patients are eligible for treatment even if they’ve experienced significant bone loss.

Benefits of a Bone Graft

Treatment can help you:

  • Preserve bone lost after a tooth extraction. A tooth infection and/or and extraction may result in bone loss. A socket preservation procedure helps maintain this structure.
  • Restore bone volume to accommodate dental implants. After you lose a tooth, your body will resorb bone in that area. We are able to utilize advanced bone grafting techniques and to restore the bone volume at the site of missing teeth.

We can either obtain bone graft material from another area of your body (back of lower jawbone) or utilize bone material from another source. Most patients in The Villages, FL prefer bone material from another source since the first option creates another surgical site. In these cases, our practice uses the same high-quality bone material as is used in major orthopedic procedures, like spine surgeries. Dr. Jaffal has developed and perfected techniques in bone grafting for patients with severe bone loss.

Another advantage that distinguishes treatment with our practice is our use of growth factors. We can produce platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) from the patient’s own blood to support healing and improve the outcome. In more complex cases, our doctors can utilize Infuse™, a bone morphogenic protein (BMP), to promote the success of the bone graft and enhance the patient’s result.

Is a Bone Graft Right for You?

If you’ve been missing teeth for an extended period of time or have had periodontal disease, you will likely require some form of bone grafting.

Central Florida Oral, Facial and Periodontal Surgery will make extensive use of digital technology to help you get the best possible result from your treatment. During your visit, your doctor will obtain a cone beam CT scan to evaluate your bone structure in 3D. The doctor will make a determination about whether you require bone grafting prior to or at the same time as implant placement.

Some patients in The Villages, FL will have sufficient native bone to have their teeth extracted, bone grafted, and implants placed during the same procedure. Others will have the extraction and a bone graft first and then wait 3-4 months before receiving their implants. This approach helps the graft integrate with the surrounding bone, giving the implants the foundation they require.

Patients who have benign tumors resected from their jaw will also need a bone graft. After removing these tumors, one of our specialists can reconstruct the jaw with or without using the patient’s own bone.

What Is the Recovery from a Bone Graft Like?

Most of our patients have a bone graft procedure under IV sedation so that they can rest comfortably throughout their treatment. Your doctor can also use EXPAREL®, a long-acting medication, to numb the site. The effects of EXPAREL last for up to three days, eliminating the most difficult stage of recovery.

Common side effects following a bone graft are swelling and mild-to-moderate discomfort as the EXPAREL wears off. You can expect to be on a soft/non-chew diet for a period of time after surgery. As with any procedure, our practice will be available to answer your questions at every step in the process.
